Catheter-Based Treatment for Selected Structural Heart Conditions
Structural heart interventions involve catheter-based procedures for selected abnormalities affecting the heart valves or congenital structures.
Dr. Rohan Ainchwar’s services include Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV), ASD Device Closure and PDA Device Closure.
Balloon Mitral Valvotomy
BMV is used in selected patients with significant narrowing of the mitral valve.
A specialized balloon catheter is positioned across the mitral valve and carefully inflated to help widen the narrowed valve opening and improve blood flow.
Detailed echocardiographic and clinical assessment is important before determining whether a patient is suitable for the procedure.
ASD Device Closure
An Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is an opening between the two upper chambers of the heart.
In suitable cases, a closure device can be delivered through a catheter and positioned across the opening, allowing the defect to be treated without conventional open-heart surgery.
PDA Device Closure
A Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) occurs when a vascular connection that normally closes after birth remains open.
Selected PDAs can be treated through catheter-based device closure.
Assessment Before Structural Intervention
Treatment planning may include:
- Clinical cardiac evaluation
- 2D Echocardiography
- TEE when appropriate
- Assessment of cardiac structure
- Evaluation of the defect or valve abnormality
- Assessment of overall heart function
Not every structural heart abnormality is suitable for catheter-based intervention. The type, size, location and anatomy of the condition need to be carefully assessed.
Dr. Ainchwar’s interventional cardiology services combine cardiac imaging, clinical evaluation and catheter-based treatment to determine an appropriate approach for selected structural heart conditions.
