Evaluating Blockages in the Coronary Arteries
Coronary angiography is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. It can help identify areas of narrowing or blockage and provide important information for planning further treatment.
Dr. Rohan Ainchwar provides coronary angiography as part of comprehensive evaluation and interventional management of coronary artery disease.
How Is Coronary Angiography Performed?
During the procedure, a thin catheter is introduced into a blood vessel and carefully guided toward the heart. Contrast material is then introduced into the coronary arteries while X-ray imaging is used to visualize blood flow.
The resulting images help the cardiologist determine:
- The location of coronary artery narrowing
- The severity of a blockage
- Whether one or multiple vessels are affected
- Whether further intervention may be required
When May It Be Recommended?
Coronary angiography may be considered after clinical evaluation in patients with suspected or established coronary artery disease. It can also be used when other cardiac investigations indicate the need for more detailed assessment of the coronary circulation.
The findings may help determine whether the patient should continue with medical management or whether procedures such as coronary angioplasty should be considered.
Advanced Coronary Assessment
Where clinically appropriate, coronary angiography can be complemented by advanced assessment techniques such as IVUS, FFR and iFR. These technologies provide additional information about coronary anatomy or the physiological significance of a narrowing.
Individualized Cardiac Evaluation
Not every patient with chest symptoms requires coronary angiography. The decision is made after reviewing symptoms, risk factors, previous investigations and overall clinical condition.
Dr. Rohan Ainchwar’s approach combines diagnostic evaluation with interventional cardiology expertise, allowing findings from coronary angiography to be considered as part of an individualized cardiac treatment plan.
